Ryan’s Bench
A colorful mosaic bench sits adjacent to an expansive activity field in the Val Vista Community Park at 7350 Johnson Drive. Shouts can be heard from nearby Field 3 as soccer players bark commands in a practice game. Ryan’s Bench was thoughtfully placed on this winding walkway because Ryan Gordon was a Ballistic Soccer player and a forward on Foothill High School’s varsity team. He often practiced at Field 3.
Created in 2005, the double-sided bench features sports-themed designs. Vitreous glass, tile, and cement form the composition over a rigid Styrofoam base. The images and design tell the story of Ryan’s life. Soccer cleats and Foothill High School socks (FHS) bounce a soccer ball above BUSC letters (Ballistic United Soccer Club). Ryan was a competitive swimmer on the Del Prado Swim Team, Sting Rays, for 13 years. Bright sun and water images transition the eye to the backrest of two legs on a scooter.
The tile bench seat is formed in a wave pattern and ducks swim around the corner to meet a turtle. He appreciated nature. Ryan’s love of bike riding and skateboarding is announced by a playful dog. A snowboard and boots lay next to Ryan’s favorite drink, Dr. Pepper, at the center of the lower bench. In the upper part of the bench, two angels with outstretched arms celebrate with joy. No matter in sunshine or rain, Ryan enjoyed each day to the fullest. Seen in the distance, the undulating backrest follows the contour of the Pleasanton Ridge where Ryan liked to hike.
Dmitry Grudski is an Oakland mosaic artist creating his sculptures for private commissions, public art, and community projects. Educated in Russia, Dmitry holds a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from Tashkent Art Institute. His training exposed him to classical European art traditions with infusions from Asia Minor. Dmitry uses mixed media and blends ancient Byzantine mosaic techniques with stained glass, mural painting, and strong sculptural lines.
Parents Curt and Valerie Gordon donated Ryan’s Bench to the City. They also established a scholarship fund in their son’s name, for a deserving graduating senior on the Foothill boys’ or Foothill girls’ soccer teams. Ryan passed away in a jet-skiing accident the summer after graduating from Foothill High School. Ryan’s Bench honors his legacy, inviting all to find fun in every day.
