Rock, Paper, Scissors

Rock Paper Scissors photo 1Scissors perched on a piece of white floating paper welded to a rock suggests the childhood game of “Rock, Paper, Scissors”, hence its name. The game begins with an issue to be settled. Two or more players fold their hands to become scissors, rock, or paper and shout out their preference.  On the count of three, the hand choice is unfolded.  Scissors cuts paper but rock breaks scissors and paper wraps rock. There are three possible outcomes: a draw, a win, or a loss. Located in front of the Chamber of Commerce at the SE corner of St. John and Peters, this sculpture is a metaphor for the mixing of chance and decision-making which determines a winner.

Rock Paper Scissors photo 2Artist Kevin Box grew up in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. His creative passion was evident at a very young age. Box received a four-year scholarship to study graphic design at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. In his senior year, an Art History grant took him to Greece for three weeks and he discovered the durability of fine art. Box changed his major to Fine Art, graduating with a BFA He began working in an Atlanta, Georgia, foundry to learn casting techniques and fabricating. Eventually, he started working with paper again, developing the process of casting paper into bronze which continues to evolve today. His popular modern art sculptures include origami birds, horses, and animals to “uplift, inspire, and encourage…”  In 2004, Box was elected as the youngest member of the National Sculptors Guild.

Kevin Box’s bronze and steel sculpture displays his career in foundry art and his dedication to multiple years of self-imposed apprenticeship in bronze casting. He now resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico with his wife Jennifer.

In 2014, Gary and Nancy Harrington privately funded this sculpture as part of H.A.P.P.Y “Harrington Art Partnership Piece for You”.
