Joyful Play
Created in Serpentine stone, well-known Zimbabwe sculpturer Dominic Benhura, enlivens hard stone with the unbridled exuberance of two children. One child raises both hands in joy; the other child stands on end with feet skyward. A renowned artist and sculptor, Dominic believes the only truth is within himself and his own experiences. He sketches profusely and uses this art to sculpt his creation. A careful observer, Benhura watched his two young daughters at play and sculpted Joyful Play with blank faces to suggest their youth and the simple joy of all children.
Privately funded by the “Harrington Art Partnership Piece for You” (H.A.P.P.Y) and the Loll Family children, Maggie, Henry, and Oliver, the sculpture was installed in 2012 on private property at 561 Main Street in front of the Morgan Chase Bank.
