Girl Reading

Girl Reading photo 1Entranced by a book, a young girl reclines forever still on a planter box leading to the Pleasanton Main Library entrance, 400 Old Bernal Ave.  Artist Dennis Smith captures the innocence of childhood in the bronze “Girl Reading” and gives a moment of reflection to all who pass.  How lovely to be reading under a shade tree!

Sculpturer Dennis Smith graduated from Brigham Young University and attended the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen. His extensive work searches the exuberance of life and offers a glimpse into the spirit of the human soul. Each piece by Dennis seeks to capture self-discovery, still vibrant and alive, as seen in the storybook that unfolds in front of the girl.  It is a moment in time, frozen with hope and possibility.

Girl Reading photo 2The statue is dedicated to the “Children of Pleasanton in Memory of Sarah Anne Lees”. Installed in 1989, it is a parent’s memorial to the vibrant young girl who loved to read, laugh and bring joy to others. It is a tribute to her memory and a celebration of her life and interest in sculptures.  Sarah is buried in the Pleasanton Pioneer Cemetery but her spirit daily welcomes all to discover adventure and wonder in the Pleasanton Library.
