The Pleasanton Cultural Arts Council and the City of Pleasanton hosted a presentation of the “Conversation Banners for Youth Engagement”. This event took place September 30, 2023 from 10:00 am – 11:30 am at the Firehouse Arts Center Patio.
The five 5’ x 3’ banners were created by artist Thomasin Dewhurst and painted with the assistance of Pleasanton youth and student groups. They were created over the past year and include environmental, wellness, and cultural themes, plus an indigenous land acknowledgement. The PUSD mariachi orchestra banner features the “Estrella del Pueblo” and the orchestra performed at the event to kick off National Hispanic Heritage Month! These banners were funded in part by the City’s Community Grant Program, Civic Arts Category.
Members of the City Council, Civic Arts Commission, City Staff, PUSD School Board and Superintendent and the press and public were invited to attend including the students who helped create the banners along with the artist, Thomasin Dewhurst. Pleasanton Cultural Arts Council’s Board Members and students also shared the stories behind the making of each of the banners. Attendees were able to see the banners up close and learn more about the positive expression and collaboration involved in the process. This is one of the many PCAC creative and enriching endeavors that are aimed to inspire and benefit both students and the community of Pleasanton.
